Had a brief amount of trouble with this earlier and figured it was worth documenting somewhere because I'm sure I'll need it again. In my case, I have page hierarchy defined and I know each page on has one parent (if any). You can, of course, go further from here if you'd like.

$pageparents = get_ancestors($post->ID, 'page');
                if($pageparents[0] > 0)
                        $pagetitle = get_page($pageparent[0])->post_title;
